Surveillance within financial institutions has historically been viewed as a function of limited value, often being conducted in low-cost, anonymous locations by relatively junior employees. However, over the past decade attitudes have changed.

The Market Abuse Regulation (MAR) which replaced the Market Abuse Directive (MAD) in 2016, has increased the pressure on firms to proactively identify suspicious activity, market abuse and financial crime, requiring them to monitor, detect and report on a broader range of suspicious behaviours on a broader range of instruments.

These increasing requirements, combined with the financial crisis in the late 2000's, a number of high-profile misconduct scandals and punitive action from regulators across the globe, has resulted in a paradigm shift in the way financial firms approach their surveillance processes.
